Endodontics
With endodontics or dental devitalization, what is intended is the removal of the dental pulp, commonly known as the “nerve”. Teeth that years ago were extracted for pulp problems, today can have another chance to remain in our mouth.
The main cause of needing this treatment is dental caries. Other possible reasons include dental trauma, a tooth fracture, or the tooth having received several restorative treatments over time.
Untreated tooth decay can progressively advance through the inside of the tooth until it reaches deeper areas where the dental pulp is located, causing inflammation and leading to cold pain. If decay progresses, heat pain, nighttime or spontaneous pain may begin, and eventually an abscess may appear.
A tooth is a highly prized organ, but sometimes we can underestimate it. A tooth extraction is a straightforward procedure most of the time, but replacing that tooth may not be as technically or economically straightforward as performing a root canal. Whenever you can, we will recommend maintaining your natural teeth using the most advanced techniques.
At Rizo & Mendonça Clinic our priority is to save the natural dentition, so we do a personalized treatment for each patient to remove the infected tissue and then rebuild the tooth in the most efficient way.
The goal of this treatment is to eliminate the bacteria that are inside the root canals. To do this, it is necessary to make a small cavity in the tooth, clean the canals with manual or mechanical instruments and finally fill the canals with suitable material to prevent new infections.
