What is Photodynamic Therapy?
Photodynamic Therapy involves the selective destruction of malignant and pre-malignant cells through the application of a photosensitising agent. Photodynamic therapy uses a source of visible light. In the case of daylight photodynamic therapy, this light source is the sun. The main advantage of daylight photodynamic therapy is that it is considerably less painful than conventional photodynamic therapy.
For which conditions is daylight photodynamic therapy useful?
Although daylight photodynamic therapy has various indications, its main use is in the treatment of extensive actinic keratoses (cancerisation field), where it achieves excellent clinical results with significantly less ‘downtime’ than other options.
What do I need to undergo daylight photodynamic therapy?
Daylight Photodynamic therapy is a simple and quick treatment. Apart from favourable weather conditions (it must not be raining, and you need two hours of sunshine after the appointment), no special preparation is required beforehand. However, daylight photodynamic therapy must be prescribed and carried out by a dermatologist; you should therefore book a dermatology appointment to assess whether daylight photodynamic therapy is the right solution for your problem.
