What is digital dermatoscopic monitoring?
Digital dermatoscopic monitoring, usually combined with full-body mapping (mole mapping), is a method for monitoring melanocytic lesions (moles or nevi).
It consists of two steps: standardized photography of the entire body surface, followed by digital dermatoscopy (20–70× magnification) of selected lesions, with images stored in software to identify any changes that may occur over time.
In what situations is digital dermatoscopic follow-up useful?
Dermatoscopic monitoring (mole mapping) is useful in cases where the prognosis of a lesion is unclear and we want to avoid unnecessary surgeries; or in patients with certain conditions, such as dysplastic nevus syndrome, where we want to identify which lesions require surgery and avoid surgery on those that do not.
How much does digital dermatoscopic monitoring cost at the Rizo & Mendonça Clinic?
At the Rizo & Mendonça Clinic, digital dermatoscopic monitoring (mole mapping) is free—that is, there is no additional cost beyond the consultation fee.
However, we do not offer digital dermatoscopic monitoring (mole mapping) to all patients. At the Rizo & Mendonça Clinic, digital dermatoscopic monitoring (mole mapping) is a tool to help the dermatologist make decisions.
All of our patients are evaluated by dermatologists trained in dermatoscopy who have decades of experience. It is up to the dermatologist to determine whether digital dermatoscopic fmonitoring (mole mapping) is indicated in your case.
What do I need to know to determine whether digital dermatoscopic monitoring is necessary in my case?
Digital dermatoscopic monitoring (mole mapping) is a tool to help dermatologists make decisions. It has very specific indications, and outside of those, there is no scientifically proven benefit to its use. Therefore, we only offer digital dermatoscopic monitoring (mole mapping) to patients for whom it can truly make a difference. If you need to have your lesions evaluated, all of our dermatologists have extensive training in dermatoscopy.
