What is cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy using liquid nitrogen (also known as cryosurgery or cryoablation) is a medical procedure that uses liquid nitrogen at extremely low temperatures (around -196 °C) to freeze and destroy abnormal or diseased tissue, such as warts, precancerous lesions, skin tumours or other skin conditions.

What does cryotherapy involve?

The dermatologist applies the liquid nitrogen directly to the affected area. The extreme cold instantly freezes the cells in the target tissue. The damaged cells die (necrosis) and are gradually eliminated by the body. As a result, a blister or scab forms, which takes between 1 and 4 weeks to heal.

For which lesions is cryotherapy useful?

Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen can be used to treat:

  • Viral warts.
  • Actinic keratoses (pre-cancerous lesions caused by the sun).
  • Other benign skin lesions (such as molluscum contagiosum or seborrhoeic keratoses).

How much does cryotherapy cost at the Rizo & Mendonça Clinic?

The Rizo & Mendonça Clinic offers cryotherapy from €40, depending on the number of lesions. However, cryotherapy is a medical procedure that must be prescribed and carried out by a dermatologist. This means that cryotherapy always involves the cost of a dermatology consultation.

We do not have agreements with insurance companies. We issue an invoice which can be used to claim a refund if your insurance covers this treatment.

What do I need to undergo cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is a simple and quick therapeutic procedure. It does not require any special preparation beforehand. However, cryotherapy is a medical procedure that must be prescribed and carried out by a dermatologist; therefore, you must book a dermatology consultation to assess whether cryotherapy is the right solution for your problem.
