What is dentistry?

Oral medicine deals with the treatment of any pathology that appears in the mouth, except those that have to do with the teeth, the maxillary bones and the salivary glands. Therefore, the expert professional can identify a wide range of conditions, such as aphthae, cysts, oral candidiasis, xerostomia or dry mouth, pre-cancer and oral cancer, etc.

All these diseases can be detected by a clinical examination of the mouth and oral mucosa, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, palate and floor of the mouth. In some cases, depending on the situation of each patient, some complementary tests may be necessary, such as X-rays, biopsies or microbiological analyses.

The treatment of each depends primarily on its nature and origin. In many cases, drugs may be prescribed orally and/or by topical application, such as antiseptic or corticosteroid rinses. In other more complex cases, it may be necessary to remove the lesion by minor surgery.
